Our Makerspace is in the first year with limited reach. Our students are truly enjoying the hands-on experiences that are challenging them to think outside the box. The students come to class each day eager to learn, build, and create. They are teaching me new concepts on a daily basis.
We are a Title I District with 53% of our student population coming from low-income families.
Our school is located in rural Sangamon County. As previously stated, 53% of our students come from low-income families. Our current mobility rate is 9%, and 10% of our students are designated homeless. In addition, 21% of our students receive Special Education services. Expanding our Makerspace will give more students the opportunities to experience what now only a very small portion get to enjoy.
My Project
Students don't grow out of LEGOs once they reach middle school. We started a Makerspace elective with our 5th-grade students this year, and it has been wildly successful. We want to expand on this by developing a unique and dynamic space for students to explore engineering while developing creativity and confidence. The baseplates we are requesting will be mounted on a wall in the library. This will create a vertical space where students can create with LEGOs.
Exposing students to hands-on STEAM activities will engage them in exploring, discovering and learning and will help to ensure their success in the future.
Getting to make and create will transform our students from consumers of things into makers of things and will foster their sense of creativity. By giving our students a chance to tinker with LEGOs, we can prepare them to be the engineers, inventors, and scientists of the 21st Century.
