I teach in a school district in a rural part of Wisconsin. Our students come from all kinds of homes and backgrounds.
Regardless of home life, all students are valued and come to school eager to learn.
My first graders are inquisitive, curious, and unique in their wonders. Students have an intrinsic motivation to learn more about the world in which they live. Their "aha" moments surprise me as they seem small, but to them, my little learners, they are so very big, and those small connections they make have some of the biggest impact on their learning and development.
My Project
In the past I have done silent reading to start our mornings. It's worked fine, but I envision a classroom where students start their day by socializing with their peers in a way that is fun and engaging. These makerspace items will be used as morning choices in our daily routine. Not only will they have fun with these items, but they will also get to strengthen relationships with peers, solve challenges together, and build from their imagination.
On top of fostering skills that will help them in their futures where many of them will work in jobs that don't exist with technology that hasn't yet been invented, these makerspace items, like the Magna Tiles, Play Doh, and Keva Structures, will provide real time practice to share, take turns, and treat others with respect.
A Creative LEGO Brick Set and other items will allow them to communicate, problem solve and build unique creations. My students would benefit in so many ways if they had these items in their classroom to engage learning and inspire them every day at school!
