My Students
The 4th graders of PS 306 are from a low-socioeconomic neighborhood. Their families struggle to provide basic needs in order to succeed in the classroom. However, this does not prevent them from doing their very best in their academics. With your help, we can help their dreams soar.
The school's library is a resource that is currently being redesigned as a media center for student engagement.
A typical day in the library is filled with information literacy activities and inquiry projects. The students crave for a place in the school that will provide activities that will be fun and challenging.
My Project
I am a Fourth grade teacher working with my school's Librarian to create makerspace activities as part of Library Media Center Appreciation Month in April. A makerspace is an area of a library that provides materials for students to create projects together. These projects promote social-emotional development and critical thinking and cooperative learning skills.
The Librarian and myself are planning to hold events throughout the month of April to celebrate the library's makerspace.
Students will make dreamcatchers as a connection to the Native American unit in Social Studies. The 3-D puzzles will also be related to Social Studies, allowing students to recreate the New York Skyline, which will remain on display in the library. Other materials, such as Legos and Qixels will be accessible for students to freely create their own masterpieces.
