I am proud to be working as the librarian in a low-income Title I school because I know I can make a difference. My students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite their diverse backgrounds and the many challenges they face, students walk into our school every day full of life, ready to learn, and excited for what is in store for them that day.
Students learn best when they get to explore, design, create, and experiment and tinker.
I want to give students the opportunity to do this in the library through Makerspace.
Makerspace is the process of learning through making…usually through STEAM activities. Since I teach ALL students on our campus, all students will have access to these activities by providing the needed materials in the library.
This is only the beginning! I am excited to challenge students and have them be engaged in creative problem-solving to help them be more connected to learning in and out of the classroom.
We live in a world where being an innovator is the key to success! Makerspace helps students become 21st century learners by preparing them to become innovators. It provides students an opportunity to use STEAM concepts and hands-on learning allowing them to use their creativity to show their understanding of a concept, topic or idea. Makerspace gives students the tools and materials to create projects that build on this learning.
I am creating a Makerspace to bring students to the library and explore science, art, engineering and the creative process through a variety of activities and projects.
We are just starting our Makerspace at our school. I am trying to stock it with supplies in hopes that the program grows a little bit each year. I am excited to have students engaged in creative problem-solving.
