The students at my school come from diverse cultural backgrounds, but I have found they share a common interest for gaining new knowledge about their world. When they show up, they are ready to collaborate, explore and learn.
Makerspaces have added a much-needed dimension to student learning by providing students the opportunity of hands-on exploration and discovery.
Attaching an interactive experience to a project allows an alternative expression of understanding ; to quote the brilliant Albert Einstein, "Play is the highest form of research." Developing a Makerspace in our library will give my students the opportunity to develop their STEM capabilities through inquiry based learning.
My Project
The picture attached is the collaboration of 3rd grade boys and girls, from my past library, who successfully designed a Cubelet robot that traveled a course they built. At my old school, I watched students grow and bloom in self-confidence as they explored inquiry-based learning through the design process by utilizing the tools in Makerspace.
Makerspaces add a new creative dimension to libraries by allowing students to discover information through the platform of hands-on learning.
However, I am at a new school that has no Makerspace materials available for students. I have no doubts that bringing the beginnings of a Makerspace using the Builder Construction sets and the Cubelets to my students will develop creating, constructing, collaborating and contributing communities of learners.
