I teach Media Center (library and computer science) at a 100% Title I school; meaning the majority of my students are considered "at-risk." Our students almost all qualify for free or reduced lunch. Many come from one-parent families or are not even being raised by their parents. Needless to say, my students are not given the same opportunities as many kids their age. They are amazing kids with drive and talent but as a teacher, it is very difficult to see them miss out on the learning opportunities that so many kids their age have because, I will do anything I can to give them what many kids their age already get fair opportunities.
My district's media center budget is zero dollars.
So, while many schools can relay heavily on parent fundraising or student fundraisers to maintain and update their library or update their media centers with technology tools like robots or MakerSpace materials, I have to rely on personal funds and crowdfunding sites like this one. Occasionally, I even rely on being the fundraising incentive when needed. (As you can see from the picture of me duct-taped to the wall when our school meet their fundraising goal)
My Project
Technology is constantly evolving and improving and as technology teacher it is so tough to determine what will last and what is just a temporary fad. 3D Printing is clearly becoming a technology that will not follow the same path as HD DVD or MiniDisk; the uses of 3D printers are ever expanding from manufacturing and producing rapid prototypes, to medical prosthetics, to toys and games; 3D Printing can go as far as your imagination and design thinking can take you.
If they can DREAM IT, they can DESIGN IT, then they can DREMEL IT.
After much research on the prevalence of 3D Printing and its ever expanding uses as an innovative technology, I knew it was something I wanted to provide to my students, much research shows that 3D printer will be a sought after skill in the job market.
After further research, the Dremel 3D45 is a popular choice among beginning 3D Printers in schools because of its ease of use and great safety features.
Thank you for taking the time to read about my projects and please help my students learn how to make their dreams a 3D REALITY!!!
