Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
As a teacher in a low income area, many of my elementary school students experience art for the first time in my classroom. Our school is not far from the Bushwick studios, so many students see the vivid and colorful murals on their way to school. My energetic students love working with art materials and getting their hands messy! Many of them look forward to their art class once a week and bring lots of ideas and interests with them!
My Project
Students get excited at working with materials that make them feel important and when they are able to work with resources that lead to endless possibilities. While many of the materials in our makers space can be found for free, such as cardboard, boxes, toilet paper rolls, paper towel rolls, we need tape and taping tools that will allow our students to be able to construct freely without worrying about not having enough materials. In addition, when our projects are finished, paint such as acrylic paint can yield results that allow students to see the fulfillment of their projects in a new way.
