My students need craft supplies like colored paper, tape, glue sticks, x-acto blades, sequins, and balloons to bring creativity to their Maker Day projects.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are 9th and 10th graders at an urban public school. We are officially a Level 4 underperforming school, which means a huge focus on academics and raising test scores. However, it's still important to incorporate fun, active, engaging ways to learn.
In my engineering class, Maker Day happens twice a week, and students are free to tinker and create whatever they can imagine.
Our school is bare-bones in many ways, and my students don't have an opportunity to take art classes. So this is their chance to let their creativity shine. Students use this time to pursue projects they are interested in, researching ideas online and drawing from the technical background they get in engineering class the other three days per week. Kids love the freedom to explore their own projects and it has led to some really interesting work.
My Project
My students have been busy creating all kinds of things this school year, like tiny googly-eyed robots that wiggle across the table, picture frames studded with flashing LEDs, boxes that lock with a push of a button using a servo motor controlled by an Arduino program. We can do a lot with materials we scavenge: cardboard boxes, plastic silverware from the cafeteria, paper towel tubes, empty water bottles. And we have been fortunate to have many electronic components donated already.
But we are constantly sharing basic tools like scissors and our one x-acto blade, and we are running out of the creative basics that bring kids' projects to life, like colored paper, pipe cleaners, glue, and tape, not to mention the extras that really make projects shine like sequins and glitter glue.
Restocking the shelves with fresh supplies will help students' imaginations go wild.
With patterned paper, craft sticks, and hot glue, two rotating shafts can become a dancing hippopotamus with a polka-dot tutu. With rhinestones, an electronically lockable box can become a treasure chest filled with jewels. With plastic cups, tape, and markers, a vibrating motor can become a self-propelled drawing machine that skits across the paper creating abstract art. With these tools and supplies, we can make anything!
