Help me give my students an easy to grab hands on experience. These materials will provide me easy access to creating a Makers Lab where my Intervention and Acceleration classes can have easy access to hands on science.
My students are coming from very diverse backgrounds. Many spend their educational years split between the Dominican Republic and here. There is a high rate of English learners and many of our population are classified as "disadvantaged". The difference can be seen and measured when students have real world connections to make science matter to their lives and passions.
These kids LOVE to be challenged, they love learning, and they will especially love an investigative approach to the scientific classroom.
This is a big year with a nearby school closing and over 200 new students joining our school.
My Project
Students will be provided easy access to interactive, hands-on scientific experiments to enforce current learning. This connection to the real world through a Makers Lab will provide my students with a variety of mini-lessons tailored to their interests and needs.
Through utilizing craft and scientific materials, my science classroom will align closely with the STEAM philosophy of bringing arts into the science classroom.
For example, I am asking for rubber bands to make a colorful solar system, multicolored beads and cardstock to make Kalidoscope, as well as vinegar and Dawn which are key ingredients to a multitude of safe science experiments. These materials will provide a base for the creations of awesome experiments, fun engineering designs and individual artistic scientific expression. I strive to connect ALL students with science, and show how creativity is the basis of great innovation and scientific breakthroughs.
I hope through this project and the start of building a great STEAM space, my students will have a more personal connection with their learning.
