My elementary school is a public, Title I, IB PYP candidate school located in Southeastern North Carolina. We serve a wide range of families, from those who are military connected to working class to those in high poverty. My students all receive free meals, as we are a federally recognized CEP school.
My students have a wide range of abilities and are highly energetic and curious about the world around them and beyond.
Many students cannot relate to places, careers, and experiences they read and are taught about that are beyond our community. I would love to be able to further foster inquiry and develop STEM skills in all students beyond what our current funding allows. Thank you for supporting my students and believing that these students can succeed!
My Project
My students love their growing makerspace in our library. This project is Step One of a multi-step request that would add more selections of STEM based activities for students to choose from during their weekly resource time. Not only would these projects help develop critical thinking skills and encourage creativity, but also provide a positive opportunity for my students. Our area was heavily damaged by Hurricane Florence this year and by Hurricane Matthew just two years ago. Many of our students have been displaced due to these storms and need a safe, nurturing environment to express themselves.
Choice activities will improve my students' engagement, excitement, and ownership of their work.
This project seeks to add Kapla planks to inspire design, engineering, and construction skills. Kapla planks will also encourage positive communication and collaboration among students. I hope to be able to inspire the next generation of tinkerers, designers, and builders, otherwise known as makers!
