My Project

As the librarian in a Title I school, I am always seeking exciting activities that will increase curiosity and create lifelong learners. Our students often struggle to see the purpose of school, which can lead to apathy and disconnection. We work hard at our school to create out of the box experiences that add meaning and richness, inspiring students to think deep and go further. One of those experiences in the library is open access to our "MakerSpace", which is an area for students to create with open-ended materials.

In this MakerSpace, students have designed binoculars, created sticker art mosaics, learned to sew as they put together a felt book -- and your donation will help our MakerSpace continue to enrich these students' lives.

This type of self-initiated and innovative activity leads to the 21st century thinking skills that students will use in the workplace. Play-doh is one of our highest requested items, as students do everything from "bake" cookies to create sculptures of their favorite biographies. Students use washi tape, stickers, and sequins as they write notes to loved ones, create awards for friends, craft paper lanterns after studying Chinese New Year, and so much more.

Our MakerSpace is one of the reasons that many of our students start the day on a positive note, as they create and craft even when they arrive in the morning. It is a place where students feel safe to make mistakes, to get curious, and to explore. We want this for all of our students; your donation helps sustain this at a deep level.
