Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students come from various backgrounds. Their socioeconomic status varies. My students are curious learners. Our school is a Title I school with limited resources for our very special population of students. My students have intellectual disabilities but that does not stop them from trying their best and learning as much as they can. They are capable of understanding their surroundings, and they constantly want to explore their world. They enjoy learning and work so hard every single day. They are inspiring. We have been working side by side with typical developing students to build a collaborative learning environment that focuses on functional life skills.
My Project
Students with intellectual disabilities and autism need to learn functional skills. Students with and without special needs need to learn to work together to create a more inclusive world. When students without special needs graduate from school and become workers and business owners, I want them to be able to hire and work with students with special needs. Having this early exposure to inclusion will help make that possible. Cooking is an essential skill, as is learning job skills for future employment. My students often have problems with fine motor skills and operating a hand held mixer has proven to be challenging for them. Having stand mixer accessories would enable my students to learn cooking skills without worrying about holding up a hand mixer. We also need cold brew coffee for recipe creation and baking.
Teaching job skills will enable my students to learn the skills necessary to secure employment.
People with intellectual disabilities and autism often are underemployed. This is because they are often judged by what their disability limits them to be able to do. Teaching job skills to students, such as baking and cooking, will enable students to have job skills needed to be competitively employed.
With these materials I hope to be able to increase my students awareness of cooking for their functional life skills as well as cooking and baking skills needed for future employment.
