My Project

The traits that we typically think of as defining a successful, well-rounded person – empathy, resilience, self-discipline, confidence – are all social and emotional skills. Giving students time to create objects and explore tools is important for social-emotional learning.

Let’s inspire the next generation of leaders with the ability to persevere through anything this complex world sends their way a maker space project to customize a McDaniel Mountain Lion Mascot to allow for social-emotional learning!

We recently went through a name change and picked a new school mascot- a mountain lion. I am ordering Mountain Lion stuffed animals and in the maker space students can sew outfits or customize the mountain lions to represent our school culture and identity. I am very excited to see what students design. Students can keep the mountain lion they design or gift to our feeder elementary schools for social emotional learning. Stuffed animals allow for facilitating the use of new vocabulary, practicing social skills, and rehearsing routines. In addition, they are also a source of learning to self-calm and regulate by providing deep pressure and warmth when hugged or used as a transitional object. We strive to have more inclusive classroom materials to drive me to be a more equitable, just, and kind teacher. I want to present a curriculum that will help students with inquiry, choice, and engagement to increase attendance.

Allowing my students to be inspired by materials and tools in the maker space will create a classroom open to social-emotional learning and will deepen connections to the curriculum.
