Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
As a teacher in a high poverty school district, I see my students face many challenges both in and out of the classroom. Gangs roam the neighborhood recruiting them at a very young age. Despite the challenges they have many students are eager to be the exception and strive for excellence. I aim to provide my students with meaningful yet creative learning experiences. Our school's motto is to prepare leaders in mind, body, and character for success in college, career, and a life of service within the global community through an education that values honor, courage, and commitment.
My Project
My school is a 7th grade through 12th grade high school building. Most of the programs available are geared towards our high school students leaving our middle school students to grow quicker. Students don't outgrow building blocks and play once they reach middle school. This wall will help develop a unique and dynamic space for students to explore engineering while developing creativity and confidence. The baseplates we are requesting will be mounted with liquid nails to a sheet of plywood on a wall in my classroom. This will create a vertical space where students can create with LEGOs.
Hands-on STEAM activities like this will help to ensure their success in the future by promoting creativity and free thought.
A simple wall like this can help prepare them to be the engineers, builders and scientists of the 21st Century.
