My students need construction paper, shapes, pom-pom, and other supplies to construct a building and decorate it to explore and measure using customary and metric measurement and calculate area and measurement. I'ḿ trying to create a more authentic experience in mathematics.
Our students are located in a part of the school district where there is more than 60% free and reduced lunch. There learning opportunities are significantly impaired do their economic standing. As such, our school really tries to enhance their experiences so they can build on their prior knowledge. In our school we have a resource room with a Special Education population that have adjusted learning objectives and many of those students benefit from a diverse practice of teaching and learning where we use a variety of modalities including hands on instructional opportunities. We service kids in our area in grades K-5. My room is the nucleus of the building where I both have constant classes but itś a welcoming environment where students frequently come work.
My Project
The materials will be used by students in grades K-5 to construct a building to learn about shapes, measure in both customary and metric measurements and when appropriate calculate area and measurements.
Additionally, students will be provided with an authentic experience to construct which includes items where students to create a geometric piece with symmetry and reflection.
They will be allowed to construct homes, factors or community buildings. The decorative pom poms and other supplies to decorate will allow students the ability to show their knowledge on those topics.
For example, students will create a building to measure that they can also create symmetry through the decorating process.
