The middle school years offer students the chance to start exploring, evolving into the young adults they want to become.
Our school is located in the heart of South Glens Falls in New York.
South Glens Falls is a small, close knit community. Our middle school consists of grades 6-8 and possesses an eclectic group of young adolescents. I have a total of 125 7th grade students throughout the day. Many of my students come from lower-middle-class families and are reluctant readers.
This year students have JUMPED into their independent reading, often entering the classroom each day begging for more “IR” time.
With so many fantastic Young Adult (YA) Literature out there, we spend a lot of time reading, sharing and discussing our books. My 7th graders this year have enthusiastically taken on their IR books, some of them already finishing their 2nd and 3rd books the 2nd full week of school!
Years ago I had a student tell me that they felt comfortable in my classroom, like they were home.
I’d like to expand on that idea even more, creating a comfortable space for students in our classroom.
While I started working on a collaborative space at the end of the last school year, I would like to expand this space even further, adding flexible seating and a variety of configurations for independent and small group work time.
