I have the honor of seeing a child’s face they first time the see the magic that happens when yellow and blue make green. I have the privilege of showing them the genius of Michelangelo and the wonder of finger paint.
My school is in a transient town with a high meth-addicted population and an over 50 % high school dropout rate.
I have kindergarteners who see crayons for the first time when I hand them out. I have high school students who only attend their other classes because we offer art.
The arts also offer something my kids need more than anything; hope. Arts offer the hope that there is a world beyond the one in which they live. In their world, color is a rare and precious thing. Please help bring color and hope to them.
My Project
The use of markers will let them explore how color changes. Coloring not only teaches self expression if presented correctly it is a study of science. Teaching them about pigments opens the door to the science of color.
Sharpies! While I could do a ton of puns; be sharp, make your mark, leave a permanent impression, the simple point is we need Sharpies. Sharpies work on foam sheets. Sharpies will work over watercolor pictures. Sharpies will work on plastic wrap. Sharpies will work on wood without bleeding.
It is well documented that the arts improve every aspect of their academic pursuits.
Art supplies, and craft supplies may seem like simple things, but they are the tools that I use to show the students there is a world out there, that there is beauty, and that they can create something good. I wish I could describe how much your gift would mean. Letting children color and draw lets them escape, dream and know that the have something to offer.
