Eager! My students come to art so eager to create. Eager to get their hands on all of the art supplies. Eager to please me. Eager for positive praise. I love seeing the sense of pride on their little faces when they complete a work of art.
I am hopeful that the sense of pride they gain in my classroom will stay with them and carry on into their future.
We are a Pre-K through 2nd grade school. "Land of the Little People." Many of our students face everyday challenges in and out of the classroom. The majority of our students are considered "at-risk." Our school is a Title I school providing free breakfast and lunch for every student. I may not be able to control their home lives, however, I can control their experiences throughout the school day. My goal is to make those experiences as positive and meaningful as possible.
Using India ink and Sharpie markers allows my students to move quickly, commit to the drawing and forgive their “mistakes”. This is a big part of art for me; giving into the process and not worrying about the details. Overcoming these obstacle, moving past the "mistakes" while creating art leads to a huge sense of accomplishment for my students.
I want my students to leave my classroom feeling accomplished and proud of themselves.
Creating art instills pride. Learning to create and succeed in new and unexpected ways is a huge boost to self confidence. Self confidence leads to courage which leads to infinite possibilities for my students.
