Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a special education teacher in a self-contained special education bridge classroom. Every September, our school is flooded with children who are meeting new teachers, making new friends, and acquainting themselves with the new rules and routines of their unfamiliar learning spaces. As teachers of new students, our responsibility is to alleviate as much of the stress from those demands as possible.
My children are eager to learn, supportive of each other as a community, and thrilled to come to school every day.
They work hard and help each other whenever they see that it's needed. They love to celebrate each other's successes and all experience the joy of mastering a new skill just as much as the student who mastered it! My job, as their teacher, is to create an environment that capitalizes on this eagerness and their strengths in order to help them learn as much as possible.
My Project
Given the unique needs of each of my students, differentiation is everything! Good supports are critical for helping all students learn, and that means I sometimes have to have three or four different versions of writing paper, two title pages, multiple kinds of handwriting tools, and an endless variety of charts and visuals--and ready all at once on a moment's notice! This huge range of materials is used every time we practice our writing.
Our current writing center is well-loved by our students, but it's not big enough to hold all the materials that meet their needs.
The kids sometimes struggle with finding the paper or materials that's just right for them. Due to space constraints, many of our helpful charts are underutilized because the children can't find the ones they need.
If we are able to bring this storage unit and these bins and trays to our classroom, there would be space for every writing template, graphic organizer, tool, and chart that the children could possibly need. This unit also lends itself to clear labeling, which would make it much easier for my students to navigate the writing center themselves. It would make such a difference for their learning if their tools were always "grab-and-go" and they could devote all of their thinking to their work!
