Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school is located in a high poverty area and 99% of our students receive free lunch. Many of my students live in temporary housing conditions as a result of poverty or domestic violence. My students often come to school with no school supplies or torn and used supplies. These students often do not even have appropriate clothing for the different types of weather. However, in spite of all these hardships that are through no fault of their own, my students still come to school eager to learn and full of questions and enthusiasm.
Our students are the best of the best and they show that every day that they walk into school with smiles on their faces regardless of what they have experienced at home or on the way to school.
Our students are motivated and determined to learn, and they take advantage of every opportunity that is afforded to them. They are often in our school from seven-thirty in the morning until five-thirty or six o'clock in the evening. Our school is their home and their safe place.
My Project
My students always love to write using a variety of modalities. When students are allowed to write with a utensil of their choice be it pencils, crayons, colored pencils or markers they are more inclined to actually want to write. My students will use all of these tools to help them practice writing sight words as well as write stories and poems.
Writing becomes fun and creative when students are allowed to use the writing tool of their choice.
These various writing tools will encourage and motivate my students to write and share their thoughts as well as develop a love of writing.
