Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school is in a low-income area, so students start kindergarten with very limited experience. Most of our students are English learners and know very little to no English.
Our goal is to make our Kindergarten classrooms a place where students feel safe, happy and enriched.
We want to give them meaningful learning experiences that they would otherwise be unable to have. Our school is a public charter, focusing on STEM enrichment. Our students love learning about science, technology, engineering and math. We also work hard to ensure our students learn life lessons that help to build them into outstanding citizens, really honing in on their social and emotional learning.
My Project
My students have been hard at work in the classroom for over 100 days! I am so proud of the progress they have made and can't wait to see how they grow during the last half!
My students are eager, excitable and ready to challenge their hard-working math minds!
I would like to see some growth in math over the next few weeks and I think some hands-on learning materials will do just the trick! A few games and some small-group materials will really help me reach all learning styles and ensure each child's needs are being met. With a class set of white boards and markers, students will quickly be able to show me their responses during whole group lessons. Once the lesson has ended, a few new center games will help reinforce the whole group skills just taught and allow the students to explore number sense independently and with partners. A few students really struggle to focus during math time and having a few seating options will help them to focus on the tasks given.
Math is often challenging for my students so I'd like to set them up for success by introducing a few new games, differentiated seating options and some quick response white boards. Wobble seats and carpet squares will help my students to manage and control their bodies when working independently and at centers. Kindergarteners sometimes need help learning strategies to focus (especially while in centers!) and the carpet squares will really help them manage the space around them when time is less structured. I know these few additions to my classroom will really help our Math block!
