I teach a class of students with Special Needs or as we call it, Life Skills. My school is located in the middle of a large city; it is urban and impoverished. The community surrounding the school is very supportive of our school and being involved. The student population is mainly comprised of Latino and African American cultures.
They have special needs which involve Autism, Down Syndrome, Cognitive Disabilities, Blind/Low Vision, Traumatic Brain Injury, Cerebral Palsy, and many others.
All of these needs make my students oh so very, very special to me! My students range in ages from 5 to 10 or grades Kindergarten through Third.
My Project
Most of my students need warm accessories for the cold winter months. These items get lost easily and sometimes they don't have the ability to purchase them for themselves.
I have put mittens in this project because my students struggle with fine motor skills so putting on gloves is difficult.
I have included warm and fuzzy socks to keep toes nice and warm on cold days and nights.
I have included school uniform appropriate sweatshirts for each student to be able to wear when it is cold in the classroom and building.
I have also included some food items to help supplement food during the winter break when they won't have access to a free breakfast and lunch.
