My students are sixth graders in a multicultural urban community. We have an extremely limited budget with minimal support from our local government to fund basic supplies.
These students love their neighborhood school because it creates a sense of community.
This is especially important because many of the students come from broken homes. They are excited to learn but often times do not have access to the same materials that other students have from surrounding districts which leaves them at a disadvantage.
I am one of a team of three hard working teachers that put through sheer will and enjoyment put on an extravagant school musical every year. We do not get any school funding, we do not ask students to pay for costumes or pay to participate, we volunteer our time three times a week after school for months to prepare a cast of 60 students between 3rd and 8th grade to perform live in front of their family and friends. For many students this is the only place that they can express themselves freely through song, dance and acting. Every year we pay for the costumes, create the sets and buy the rights to the play ourselves through fundraising efforts and a small amount of proceeds from bake sales that occur during the shows. I have created a list of things that we really could use this year to make our performance of Little Mermaid Jr. a big success. Being able to receive these various costume pieces would really alleviate the stress that these things put on our small budget and really help elevate our performance. Students always ask me day one what their costume will look like because for a lot of them being able to escape into any character really is the highlight of their year and even entire elementary school experience. Please consider supporting the arts and our school's production. Thank you!
