Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Growing up in a tough neighborhood in the Bronx is bound to come with hardships. My class has had their fair share of violence and sadness. As their teacher I can't fix what happened so instead I concentrate on trying to make my classroom a happy, productive, and healthy environment for these students who may suffer so much at home.
A large part of teaching these 28 students is counseling them through their emotions and experiences before the students are even prepared to learn. This is one of the most rewarding parts of my job. When a child is finally able to express him or herself enough that he or she is ready and able to learn, then I know I have made a difference. This informal counseling is imperative to my students' success in school.
I use lots of art projects in my lessons. Not only does this make learning more interesting and fun, but allowing children to express themselves in artwork is a type of counseling unto itself. Through painting and other mediums, the children are forced to practice self control and they are able to find a suitable outlet for their emotions. Painting is a relaxing and calming way for the children to interpret their lessons. And of course, their finished products are always colorful works of art!
Please help brighten my students' lives by providing us with a painting center complete with brushes, paint cups and tempera paints.
