Can you imagine spending the school day learning math, science, social studies, reading, and writing in both Spanish and English? That is the challenging task my students take on each and every day, coming school eager and ready to do their best. While their families may value the learning of two languages, they do not necessarily have the language skills, knowledge, or resources to support them at home. Becoming bilingual is a skill that is helping them become better critical thinkers and problem solvers ready to make a difference in our society.
The students in my classroom come from diverse backgrounds and have diverse learning styles.
One hundred percent of them receive free lunch and breakfast at school. This public school is located in Worcester, Massachusetts a city plagued by violence and crime. Despite all the challenges that may get in the way of their learning, my students come to school with a desire to learn and excel in all areas.
My Project
My students need visual examples of science and math in action, and BrainPop in Spanish and English can make that happen for my students. Direct instruction, science experiments, and content area readings can prove incomprehensible to students when they don't have the language necessary to access the information that will help them understand our world. BrainPOP can provide students with real-life engaging animated videos, learning games, and both online and printable activities making the content accessible to all students at their own paces. They can access and use the videos and activities both inside and outside of the classroom extending their learning and enhancing the classroom instruction. Watching these videos, reading the supplemental informational sheets, playing the learning games, and answering the quiz questions will help students understand science and math concepts as well as improve their Spanish and English language skills.
