Learning is so much more than reading from a textbook. I make history come alive in my classroom with songs, chants, and stories. Sometimes, the students even become the teachers. There is nothing more satisfying than hearing a student say, "I get it"!!!
My students are the best!
They are highly motivated and high achieving. Most people don't believe me when I tell them that junior high students will sing chants to help them learn history. I have had parents tell me that they will hear their child singing something they have never heard, only to find out that it is one of the chants I wrote to teach my students about the Roman Empire. Often times, people look at these high achieving students and think that they will just learn it on their own. For some, that may be true. But that doesn't mean that the process of learning shouldn't be fun. My goal is never again to hear someone say "Oh, I hated history when I was growing up".
My Project
The white board easel I am requesting will bring the learning closer to my students. In this time of budget crisis, I would also like to do my part to help the environment. When I asked my students to evaluate my program last year, they said they learned a lot but they were concerned with the amount of paper that I used. This whiteboard will save at least 4-8 large sheets of paper daily. Add that up over the school year, and that is a lot of trees! My students will also be able to do mini-demonstrations themselves. If they can teach it, they will learn it!
It is so important to me that I make history exciting for my students.
I want to take this love of history and carry it with them for the rest of their lives. The students may not remember every detail of every event that I teach them, but they will remember that learning can be fun and that History does not have to be boring!
