Make The Lab A Better Place: Lab Stools For Chemistry

My students need 28 stools. I am asking for durable, affordable, and practical stools. I chose red and green (our school’s colors) so my students can feel school spirit in my room.

My Students

I teach Integrated Chemistry and Physics, Honors Chemistry, AP Chemistry and Chemistry II Dual Credit to approximately 120 students each year at a high-poverty urban school.

"Why are all your stools broken Mrs. F?" This is a question I have heard many times during the last 2 school years.

My students love working at lab stations but hate having to stand for prolonged periods of time due to lack of stools.

My classes serve a wide variety of students. I have both high-performing 10-12 graders in my AP chem and chem II courses, 9-10 graders in my honors chemistry course, and low-performing 10-12 graders in my integrated chemistry and physics class. In my classroom, I have many students with disabilities and English language learners. These students tend to succeed more when placed in groups at the lab stations. They need stools to sit down on so they can learn comfortably.

My Project

My students need 28 stools. I am asking for durable, affordable, and practical stools. I chose red and green (our school’s colors) so my students can feel school spirit in my room. My classroom is equipped with both student desks and lab stations but I do not have enough stools for my students to sit down at the lab stations. The Science department has been without this essential supply for over 10 years in many of the rooms. After purchasing supplies to conduct labs there just is not enough money left to buy stools.

My classroom is an active place and lab stations are used every day of the week by some or all students.

Students work collaboratively in groups, perform experiments, and build models. They love working at the lab stations but find them uncomfortable at times. If the students can be comfortable they can focus better and learn more.

Lack of lab stools is also a safety issue. Students who are uncomfortable will try to get comfortable in interesting ways. I have seen students try to lay across the tables, sit on top of student desks, or lean on the counters that could have dangerous chemicals on the surface. Lab stools would prevent this issue.
