Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students come from diverse background and have very diverse language and communication needs. Each of them has a different access to auditory information and uses different methods of expressive language. We are able to create an environment here where they have communication access to become part of a community and develop a sense of belonging.
These children are learning to listen and speak, something we often take for granted.
They are working to achieve something that we don't think about, that comes automatically. Despite their differences in hearing, these students strive everyday to become competent communicators and reach their highest potential!
My Project
Using the Adafruit design for Firewalker shoes, we will learn about circuits, LEDs, pressure sensitive material, conductors, soldering, and batteries. We plan to program FLORA boards for each shoe in order to make a movement activated light system.
Transforming our tap shoes into FireTapper shoes, we will bring the entertainment of tap dancing into the visual sense to give full access to our Deaf/deaf/hard of hearing peers, staff, and families!
Each shoe will activate different lights for toes and heels. This will create a visual representation of the variety of sounds that tap dancing creates. Giving our audience full access will be a fulfillment of our project, but giving the joy of dance and music to my students will be a joy to me!
