Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am an elementary teacher in a low-income neighborhood in south LA. My students are amazing! If you ask my students what they want to do when they grow up, each will tell you they want to change the world. Our classroom has big goals in their personal learning, our community and beyond.
On a beginning of the year student survey, almost all of my students had clear aspirations for their future.
They want to be doctors, biologists, geologists and more. They are bright and energetic. They actually enjoy coming to school and learning. The administration, other teachers and I, do all that we can to make this a place where learning is hands-on and fun.
Every year, we have various events that take the learning outside of the classroom. Sometimes it is figuring out the area and perimeter of the playground or looking for signs of weathering on the yard. As often as we can, we aim to give them opportunities to not just learn, but apply and practice what they are learning.
My Project
Every year, we celebrate Earth Day at our school. During Earth Day, students get to be nature detectives, botanists, garners, conservationists and more. This Earth Day, we want to foster their love of science and let them engage in an interactive assembly in which they will get to learn about forces and motion on Earth.
The performer will use thrilling demonstrations to both amaze and inspire our students about the often intimidating field of physics.
After introducing them to Sir Isaac Newton, he'll dive right into the theory of gravity where the fun is only just beginning. Once they all understand why everything falls down, they waste no time in getting to the foundation of modern physics: Newton's three laws of motion.
Two demonstrations on inertia including the classic tablecloth pull to get the students excited and curious about natural examples of physics. The second law of motion steals the show as it is explained using a real-life version of everybody's favorite video game involving slingshots and irritated birds. Then, the law of action and equal and opposite reactions is showcased using numerous examples including a rocket launch!
Somehow, they even manage to touch on energy, kinetic energy, potential energy and the Law of Conservation of Energy in this action-packed, forty-five minute presentation.
Please help me introduce our students to the world of physics and how it affects our everyday lives with Forces and Motion, an exciting, interactive science assembly program.
