Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"Anyone who has ever struggled with poverty knows how extremely expensive it is to be poor."- James A. Baldwin
The students in my classroom are a part of a community that really struggles financially, but there is no reason why they should miss out on a top notch education.
The students we cater are at or below the poverty line, most of them have been homeless at one time or another.
93% are on free and reduced lunch. The side of town that the school is on has a very high transiency rate. The school is right across the street from a temporary budget housing complex, which is where many of our students live. We cater to a high Hispanic population where english is the second language to most. With everything that my students have going on in their personal lives, they come to class ready to learn and try their best not to let what happens outside of the classroom effect what happens in the classroom.
My Project
I'm asking for reading comprehension materials such as reading comprehension games, reading comprehension activities, and reading intervention activities to help my students become better readers. I'm asking for these items for my students because my students haven't found the love for reading that I've always had. Part of the problem is that they aren't understanding what they are reading. How can we expect them to LOVE reading if they don't know what they're reading?
Unfortunately not everybody in the world is given the same resources to succeed as everybody else.
It's my job as a teacher to provide the steps for success to every student that comes into my classroom regardless of their ethnicity, economic background, etc.
