My Students

My class is comprised of 95% second language learners with 90% being free or reduced lunch. Typically I have a group of 30 students who work hard and are very appreciative. There are 4 fifth grades at my school and we work closely together as a team sharing all materials.

The student in my class are eager to learn and are always looking forward to our next novel study because they so enjoy sharing the story wtih their classmates and hearing everyone else's points of view.

My Project

My students need two class sets of 32 copies of literature to read together, discuss themes and build their comprehension and fluency with engaging materials such as the books Doll Bones and Flora and Ulysses: The Illuminated Adventures. Reading is essential to everyone, and to cement the joy of reading excellent materials are essential. Using novels in the classroom allows all of the students access to rich reading material and discussions that allow the student to make connections between the text and their own lives.

In order to make reading great again students need engaging, fresh high interest books that will give them the joy of reading for a lifetime.

My students who have experienced new books absolutely glow with anticipation on what is to come between the covers. As a teacher I love to put a glow on their faces.
