Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
This year, my district has initiated a STEM program within 7th grade classrooms. As a 7th grade STEM ELA teacher, my year began on the wrong foot when my school was damaged due to Hurricane Harvey. My school is recognized as a Title I school, which means that most of the students I service come from low socioeconomic families.
Many of my students have lost their homes and worry about what the future holds for them since the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey.
I want school, in particular, my classroom, to be seen as a safe learning environment since their world is currently turned upside down.
This year, both my students and I have been sharing a classroom with our sister school. The students in my class are eager to learn. They love to participate, and any opportunity they get to share what they have learned with their peers, makes them excited. This is the first year that we have added a STEM academy to our district. However, the damage left behind by Hurricane Harvey have taken away some of my teacher resources that are needed to effectively run my class.
My Project
I am currently teaching STEM courses in which students love to read non-fiction professional career books during silent sustained reading time! The bean bag chairs will be a nice addition to our reading center by improving my students comfort level while enjoying a book of their choice!
Since the devastation due to Hurricane Harvey, my students were stripped away from an opportunity to enjoy what was once our reading center.
This new comfortable addition will be a chance for my students to continue to strive to become the top accelerated readers of the month! This new addition will also motivate my students share book talks among each other in order to continue generating non fiction interest!
