This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
"I hate to read!!” is what my students often say at the beginning of the school year. To help my students improve their reading abilities and discover the joy of reading, I need to fill my classroom library with books teenagers will love.
I teach 85 high school students in a high-poverty school in Saint Louis.
My students are two or more grade levels behind in reading. Many of my students have not read a book since they were a small child. They do not have access to books or can't find any that they can connect to. My students are insecure with their reading abilities and will often shut down or become easily frustrated with reading tasks. My students are enthusiastic and lively learners, but they don't have learning resources or support at home with reading. My goal is to help them learn to love reading. It is so wonderful when I see my students who "hate" reading become engrossed in engaging literature. The current problem is that I don't have enough of their favorite titles to go around.
My Project
To change these negative attitudes about reading, I hope to give my students the time to read books of their choice every day in my classroom. During daily independent reading time, I will try to make reading fun and help them develop a passion for reading. Having the books that my students love in my classroom will increase their fluency, comprehension, and vocabulary skills. If my students find books that engage them, they will spend more time reading and will become more confident and skilled readers. These high-interest books will inspire non-readers to read!
If I can help improve my students’ literacy levels, it would make a big difference in their future success.
A donation to this project will allow me to expose my students to books they will love. The high-interest books will motivate my students to read, and they will improve their reading skills. My students and I would be very thankful for any donation to create our classroom library!
