The students I teach are in preschool and the ages range from 3-5 years old. They are all currently students with developmental differences including; speech/language delays, developmental delays, Autism Spectrum Disorder, Multiple Impairments, Cerebral Palsy, and Muscular Dystrophy.
Our Early Childhood Team is in the process of pushing for full inclusion for our students into regular education preschool classrooms for next school year, or as soon as possible!
We have seen the difference that typical peers can make for students with special needs. We are willing to drop our self-contained classrooms for a chance to make this work. We will need help with funding materials.
A challenge our community faces is that 73% of our families are living below the poverty level of income. There are tremendous needs for the children in our town. We want to be able to best service our students in classrooms that are full of energy, fun, safety, great materials, and typical experiences. That is what every kid wants and needs!
My Project
We are continuing to try and raise money for our classroom transformation to a more neutral environment. All of the support we received on our our first purchase, the classroom rug, gave us great motivation to continue adding items on donors choose. It really is amazing to see the community support!
The furniture requested will be for our reading center, which is one of the most important interest areas in the classroom!
We are hoping to purchase a nice comfy brown leather couch and chair. These items are very neutral, durable, washable, and perfectly sized for our little 3-5 year old learners.
We currently use old bean bags chairs that are super bright and colorful. I believe some of the items are overstimulating for some students. We are trying to create an environment that is closer to feel of home, so that students are calm, and learning can happen!
