My Students

My students are ethnically, racially, and socioeconomically diverse. They have a vibrancy and uniqueness that makes my job fun and interesting.

My students get fired up about social, economic, and environmental justice because they know the world is full of challenges.

They know that they'll need to help our world overcome those challenges.

Some of my students really struggle with reading, but they are all starting to really enjoy the power of deep reading combined with thoughtful analysis of impressive writing.

My Project

The best way for students to become better readers and writers is to make connections between what students read and how they write. It's that synthesis between both the reading and the writing that helps students' literacy skills grow exponentially.

Having multi-color highlighters in the classroom helps my students visualize writers' strategies so that they can emulate those models when they go to write their own arguments, narratives, letters, and poems.

About 10 years ago, I was able to buy a class set of multi-color highlighters. Now, those highlighters are almost all dried up. We still use them, but it's becoming difficult to tell the difference between the colors. Please help me replenish this valuable classroom resource!
