My students have trouble understanding how physics explains the way we interact with the world around us. This dynamics track can make physics come alive for them! With about 3100 students, our high school is among the largest in New York City.
My students come from all over the world. I have an incredibly diverse set of classes and they all bring something different into the classroom. I teach all levels of high school so my students have a wide range of goals and interests. Some of them are just starting high school and are in an accelerated program taking physics in their freshman year, and some are on their way to college excited to start their new academic careers. They love days we are able to do labs in our class because they get to work in groups and interact with different equipment. Unfortunately, we do not spend nearly enough time working in the lab because we lack a lot of equipment. This start up kit would really bring our classroom up to speed with the latest technology and allow my students to reignite their love for science.
The equipment I want for my classroom will help with all sorts of physics demonstrations for my class. This is a basic set up where so many different physics phenomenons can be explained and visualized. With help from my students, I would set up a daily demonstration of what we are going to study and learn about in class that day. Students will learn about velocity, acceleration, forces, conservation of energy and a full range of kinematic principles. Eventually, the ultimate goal will be to have enough tracks so students could set up their own experiments
Not only will this help students visualize what we are learning in class, but it will allow students to work hands on with equipment while making connections to different physics concepts.
Working with this type of equipment will also expose them to state of the art lab equipment and technology that they will also use in physics classes in college. A demonstration a day can also help spark students interests not only in the days lesson, but in physics and science overall.
