My new first graders are passionate about reading! Our school is dual language , and I am the teacher for the first grade Spanish-only classroom, where two sets of first graders learn all of the subjects in Spanish every other day.
The two groups of first graders that I am working with this year absolutely love reading books aloud together as a class.
However, the biggest complaint that I hear both from parents and students is that there isn't enough of a variety of options for read aloud books in Spanish. In order to nurture a love for reading in both English and Spanish, students need to see and read attractive, exciting books in Spanish as well as English. In general, my students are testing significantly below the average for the grade level, and much of this is due to the fact that they aren't exposed to captivating texts at their level.
My students are at all different levels in terms of their level of Spanish, but they all have a love for exciting read aloud books! Having a monthly shipment of beautiful new Spanish language picture books to read as a class will allow my students' appreciation for Spanish to grow.
Although my students are passionate readers, they often opt for books in English because they feel that the Spanish books available to them are beat up and outdated.
As a dual language Spanish teacher, it breaks my heart to hear from parents that their child has become less comfortable reading in Spanish because of the lack of options in terms of children's books in Spanish.
This monthly book box will inspire my students to read more and more in Spanish and will create a classroom environment where every book is a new journey for our class.
