My Project

Students at our school want to be environmentally friendly and give back to our community as part of our learning process. We are raising vegetables in our rooftop garden to donate to a local food bank and learning as we do it. To fundraise for our gardening needs we are setting up a garden light show where community members can participate and make a donation. The garden show will be multiple nights to showcase our initiatives.

The students in K-4 are learning about plants, Georgia habitats, crop rotations, the life cycle of plants, and what plants grow in an ecosystem.

They are using the engineering design process to create fairy houses. The fifth graders are using their knowledge of electricity to wire and light the fairy houses. All of this, will create a community garden that the students will have created. The vegetables that the students grow will be donated to a local food bank.

For our garden show, we want to purchase solar lights to decorate and outdoor speakers to add some ambiance. We will have all grade levels participate in making our garden light show a success, so we can grow lots of food for people experiencing food insecurity. At the garden show, we will solicit donations for seeds and soil, so we can continue our garden year to year. Each year, our students will replant and redesign the space as part of a yearly project-based learning project.
