I work with one the most incredible group of children. Each child has the biggest heart and incredible empathy for others.
This is my first year teaching in Oakland.
I work at a Title 9 school with about 70% of students on free lunch. My students come from all different backgrounds and from all different cultures. Each day I am blessed to learn from them and inspired by their abilities to persevere and and overcome the tremendous obstacles that they face each day. Many of my students have the abilities to be successful in school but lack the confidence and materials to do so. Together we are making great strides, but there is still so much more to do.
I want to give my students a library that reflects who they are, where they come from and is filled with stories about people who look like them.
My Project
Each week my students book shop in our classroom library. They pick books that are of interest to them as well as books at their reading level. These are the books they read for the whole week. It is important that our library is well stocked. Each teacher is responsible for creating, organizing and developing their library.
My goal this year is to make sure that my students have books to choose from that reflect them and their lives.
I am fortunate to have classroom library, but it isn't as diverse as my student population. In order to build my students confidence and interest in reading, I need to give them materials that help them understand their worth and the importance of their story.
