There is a strong sense of community at my school. Parents are hard-working who often come from other countries for a better life. Most children come with a willingness and zeal to learn. It is such a joy to face a room filled with faces eager to absorb all that they can.
They are always up to the challenge!
By the end of the school year, we broke school reading records for the class who read the most books in a short period of time. In twenty years I have never seen anything like this.
I chose this book so the children will have a chance to see life through someone else's life, especially someone less fortunate than themselves. It will give them an opportunity to see how circumstances don't have to let you down; extend empathy and compassion and perhaps even identify to a degree.
Many of my children don't have a chance to read at home because of parent time constraints and/or language differences.
It is important for children to see life through different lenses. Many times children don't believe that they can make a difference because of their age. Malala's story is a perfect example of showing them that they can make a difference.
