I am a first year teacher in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. I teach first grade in an Equity plus school, which means that a large percentage of our students qualify for free or reduced lunch (a measure of poverty). Our school does not have an active PTA, so funding is limited. One thing that my classroom is lacking is hands-on science materials for some of the first grade science units. Young children love science, especially when it is hands on! Fortunately, the county that I teach in provides us with fantastic science kits. However, the kits only cover half of the science curriculum. One of the units that the kits do not cover is movement. Instead of using books to teach this unit, I know that my students would love to have concrete materials. For instance, making and racing cars would be a much more interesting way to learn about movement. Manipulating gears, making ramps, and using spinners would also be exciting alternatives for my first grade class. I am asking for some building materials and science kits so that I can put together a hands-on unit on movement.
