Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach a fabulous set of first grade bilingual students! The students I work with come from a mix of countries, backgrounds, and ethnicities. Some of my students have single parents who highly depend on our school for the language, education, and safety of their children.
I firmly believe these students can have fun while learning when they have an environment balanced with learning tools and technology.
My students treasure all of their hard work and enjoy seeing what they've learned so far in their classroom. They are excited about go home and share their experiences about what they learned on and off screen with parents in our community classroom.
For the majority, the only language spoken at home is Spanish, so when they’re at school they are super eager to absorb literacy in ELA and Math! During their free time in class, they’re often found looking back through their journals, drawing pictures about the day's lessons, and touring the room with their partner to review classroom charts and all the vocabulary (both Math and ELA) on display.
My Project
We have been rolling out Message Time during our morning block with the students to practice fluency of reading. Every day the students and I read a passage on an anchor chart and work together to identify the beginning sounds, ending sounds and sight words in our passage. Within no time, the kids are fluent readers of the passage....but only with some engaging tools to help.
I'd like to add colorful markers, smelly markers, bright post-its and varied anchor chart paper to make it more fun for my little ones.
They relish in using bright, fun tools to help them learn!
