Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are from a low socioeconomic neighborhood in Las Vegas, Nevada, which results in little to none of the basic supplies being provided for them. Regardless of their backgrounds, my first grade students come to school every day with smiles on their faces and are eager to learn.
Although research shows living in a low socioeconomic neighborhood correlates to lower educational achievement, my students are the exception.
My students work hard and strive to do their personal best each day. They are kind, caring, inquisitive and have great aspirations for their futures.
My Project
My first grade students struggle with math facts and concepts. Giving them opportunities to explore these in both concrete and representational ways will help them make connections, in turn, boosting their math skills.
Math balance scales will help my students learn comparisons and number relationships, a concept that is hard for them to understand.
The 120 number mats will help them learn number concepts, practice addition and subtraction, and set the stage for place value. The GeoSolids will give them the hands-on opportunity to explore geometry. Seeing where my students are struggling this year, I know that these will make math more meaningful for them, and help them catch these difficult concepts.
