This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
"Where are you headed? College! Will you succeed? YES! When you succeed, what will you do? Change history and give back to my community!!!" This is the chant that our fabulous scholars recite as they exit dismissal and head a eagerly back to class to learn! They say it with conviction and I believe them 100%.
My scholars face unimaginable challenges but are working hard daily to change their own story as well as the history of their community!
I teach in a high needs public school in Milwaukee where a very small percentage of our scholars are on grade level in reading or math and 100% of our scholars receive free breakfast and lunch daily.
My Project
We need math manipulatives to help make meaning of math standards in first grade. At this age students need to the opportunity to experience, explore and learn with hands-on materials to help them practice and develop a strong understanding of concepts.
Manipulatives help students learn by allowing them to have hands on experiences which help them to verbalize their mathematical thinking, discuss mathematical ideas and concepts, create deeper more meaningful critical thinking skills and work collaboratively with their peers!
With a significant number of my students being identified as having special needs math manipulatives are especially important to providing them with adequate supports and modifications to access the curriculum and experience success in our lessons.
Please help me to provide my students with mini-gear clocks, geometric shapes, magnetic money, tens-frames, number lines and place value blocks to allow for strong modeling for students as well as ample materials for students to engage in hands on learning to strengthen their understanding of these complex math concepts they are faced with in first grade!
