Math is an exciting and potentially "hands-on" experience for many students. The potential for exploration and discovery is limitless. In our classroom we use a very traditional math program--the majority of the students are fluent with their addition facts (to doubles 1) and their subtraction facts to -2. They do not, however, have a lot of opportunity for really discovering the mysteries, puzzles and possibilities for interacting with math. The goal of this proposal is to provide supplemental and enrichment materials to complement our math curriculum. Many students find success and enjoyment in interacting with math problems in a really hands-on manner. Math instruction also helps develop and encourage spatial reasoning. Using tangrams, for example, has shown to help "wire" kids' minds with skills needed for architectural and engineering activities. Essential concepts such as time and money also greatly benefit from touching and manipulating objects. The graphing kit also provides a unique, multi-dimensional representation of data. This proposal also requests cuisenaire rods and curriculum to provide an additional and unique experience with mathematical concepts. Math is so much more than simply learning the basics and memorizing the facts. I want to ensure that my students also experience its puzzles, challenges, and joys.
