Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are primarily from low-income and working-class families in North County San Diego. Our school is located in a part of Oceanside, California that contains many low-income housing areas. I teach Fourth Grade, and I absolutely love it! We are back in the classroom after a whole year of virtual school due to COVID-19. The pandemic has hit many of my students' families hard, with learning loss, loss of employment, and loss of loved ones.

Over half of my students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch.

Many of them come from immigrant families where few family members have graduated from college. My students' parents are primarily working class, and some of them live in multiple-family homes. Now more than ever, my students' families are working hard to make ends meet.

That being said, my students are delightful, curious learners and are wonderful to teach. They are enthusiastic about being in school, and love to learn every single day! They are creative, funny, smart, and hard-working. They love physical education games, art, science, hands-on projects, reading, and healthy competition! I love my learners!

My Project

My students need fun and engaging games to help them practice their math fact fluency. I recently discovered during a math lesson that my students do not know their basic multiplication facts. This hinders them in their ability to successfully solve more complicated math problems.

According to research by Dr Karyn Purvis, scientists have discovered that it takes approximately 400 repetitions to create a new synapse in the brain, unless it is done in play, in which case it only takes 10 to 20 repetitions.

My students need math games that will help them to become fluent in their basic addition, subtraction, multiplication and division facts. I have requested Teachers Pay Teachers gift cards. These gift cards will allow me to download the resources we need to help my students play some fun math games, and make math fun!
