Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are from a low socioeconomic urban city. The young student leaders are eager to learn. They love school and the environment in the classroom. The students love reading, especially using online programs with Epic, IXL, and Freckle. However, the students do not have one-to-one devices.
The students and teachers participate in the Leader in Me program which teaches leadership skills to the students.
This program really helps students grow and learn adult social and behavioral skills. Most support for our students comes from the school and the school's staff members.
My Project
My students need math manipulatives to help bring a strong conceptual understanding of mathematical concepts. Hands-on math manipulation is proven to help all students understand math concepts.
In third grade, we teach mathematical concepts that help build on future math concepts.
Without a true understanding of these concepts, students struggle with math the rest of their lives.
My students need these manipulatives to help build a visual display of math concepts such as arrays and groups in multiplication and division. They need square tiles to help build concepts of area and perimeter. They need fraction bars to help build concepts of fractions such as naming, identifying unit fractions, comparing fractions, and adding and subtracting fractions.
