Help me give my students access to books, sensory equipment, and seating to alleviate the stress caused by ADHD, anxiety, autism, and other learning disabilities.
My students are wonderful kids! Because of their various learning and physical disabilities they have to push harder to learn. There are some children that are nonverbal, hearing impaired, ADHD, generalized anxiety disorder or physically disabled. These children are also low-income with over 50% of them being in poverty.
These kids are faced daily with food crisis, personal health concerns, and low socioeconomic status.
They have so many obstacles that would be daunting to the most neurotypical person. For these kids to face daily challenges in home and school and work tirelessly to succeed is amazing.
My students are in Occupational Therapy as well as Speech Therapy on a weekly basis. To provide them with opportunities within the classroom to improve their fine motor skill, cooperation, critical thinking, and speech is invaluable.
My Project
My project includes sensory items to help alleviate behaviors due to ADHD, anxiety, autism, learning disabilities, and communication disorders. There are wiggle seats, puzzles, books, play-doh, and kinetic sand all of which are able to help with dexterity for students in occupational therapy.
Sensory play is imperative to children because it develops motor skills.
Making waves in a water table or drawing circles in shaving cream, children are strengthening the muscles in their body that are needed for daily living activities such as zipping their coats or brushing their hair.
I am asking for a color changing light table, sensory tub, and washable materials to help with the development of motor skills. All of my students receive occupational therapy but only twice a week and for 10 minutes each session because so many students require services. Wobble cushions benefit students with ADHD because they are practicing active sitting which is friendly to fidgety behavior but slight enough not to disturb other students. Play-doh is great for sensory play, mathematics instruction, and alphabetic shape creation. Puzzles will help with motor skill development, problem-solving, and geometric discovery. The books are for literacy development, motor skills in being able to turn a page, and phonic development.
