All children start their school careers with sparkling imaginations, fertile minds, and a willingness to take risks with what they think. Let's give these students a program that allows them to think outside of the traditional classroom.
My students range from kindergarten to eighth grade and like most kids, they love learning through doing.
We are a charter school in the heart of El Cajon, California and using STEAM teaching materials for our students to learn how to critically think and solve problems is a big part of what we are trying to do for our students. We would like to teach these skills through a beginning robotics, coding, and programming class. We previously received some Lego WeDo sets but are now in need of iPads to help us be more successful in working with these kits.
My school is a charter school that serves many students who do not have the vast opportunities of some affluent districts. This project will afford them the opportunities to learn design and engineering principles while playing and experimenting at the same time.
My Project
These materials will help to increase students' understanding of how the engineering design process works and learn to work together as a team to solve real-world problems by creating sustainable solutions. The iPad will be used with Lego WeDo 2.0 kits and will allow my students to use a medium that many of them already are accustomed to in order to discuss, plan, create, and build models for their solutions to the problems that the teacher and kits have proposed for them to solve. The goal of these resources is to afford the students equitable opportunities in learning the value of STEM-based education and how it applies to real-world problems. These materials will also help students understand that jobs such as this exist and that they can work hard to go into a field where they can help to develop STEM-based solutions to actual real-world issues. They will serve as a foundational piece for expanding the program into far greater robotics, coding, and STEM-based curriculum and programs.
