My students need literacy and math games to create fun, independent learning centers. Some of the centers include: tangrams, blocks, letter beads, and sight word puzzles.

Do you want to help my first grade scholars get excited about reading and math?
I teach 24 bright and beautiful children in a high need area of New York City. Most of my students are learning English as their second language, receive free or reduced lunch and are so eager to learn every day. Unfortunately, my classroom does not always meet the needs of my very excited learners with regards to materials and supplies. Our wonderful, community oriented school does not have extra money for any supplies aside from the basics like pencils and paper.
My Project
Remember all those hours you spent learning how to read and do basic math? Maybe, your parents helped you. Many of my students do not have anyone at home that works with them. They have very little support and therefore they need repeated practice at school. We practice basic math skills as well as foundational reading skills in centers every day. The best part about these centers is that they are fun and engaging so students are motivated to spend extra time practicing.
The students will be using the math manipulatives during math centers and games to enhance the math lessons that have been taught. We will be using math match ups to practice skills like counting and adding. We will use the tangrams and blocks when we learn about two and three dimensional shapes.
My students will use the word working materials so that they can learn whilst having fun! They will use the letter strings, stamps, tactile cards and sight word puzzles to learn sight words.
The literacy and math games will have a tremendous impact on my students' academic success.
Not only are these materials extremely engaging but they will also ensure student achievement. You will not only be helping my students this year, but for all the years to come.
